Ever since the release of the original Nintendo, or NES, in the 1980's, we have had the ability to play arcade style gun games in our own home. As the technology advanced through new and more graphical game systems, so did the quality of games. We've gone from two dimensional, 8 bit color, games to new fully 3D enhanced environments. Proof of this is seen nowhere better than at the video arcade, where the newest 3D technology is applied to almost all the games, and it shows.

Although Duck Hunt will never die out completely, the game which started light-gun arcade games in our own home, there are new and amazing games which we can play on today's systems. This article will briefly describe some of the more popular, and fun, of these games available for the PS2. Keep in mind, that these games require the use of the Guncon2, or third party equivalent, to play.

First up, Resident Evil: Dead Aim. This is a great game which follows in the foot steps of it's predecessors, the player must walk around solving puzzles and trying to survive a zombie infestation. This game is very much different from other shooting games, because in most other  gun games, you have no control of where you go. For example: Think back to Lethal Enforcers or Mad Dog McGree, once you enter a level, you follow a set path from A to B, you can't turn or stop to look at things or to investigate. This game is entirely different, because you are only in 'Shooting Mode' when you want to shoot things. The majority of the time, you control your own player by walking around, collecting objects, solving puzzles and moving from room to room. All this is done with a 3rd person view, exactly like all the other games in the Resident Evil series. Dead Aim is truly one of the most unique light-gun games for the PS2, with a creepy atmosphere, suspenseful game play and even scarier zombies.

Next we'll talk about End Game. Unfortunately, unlike the previous game mentioned, this game does indeed follow a set path from A to B. There are some neat features, such as the ability to duck. Think again about Lethal Enforcers or Mad Dog, when you're in a room with 5 bad guys firing at you, you have no choice but to get them before they get you. There is nowhere to hide. But in End Game, you have the ability to duck behind a wall, desk or other object. This adds a new level of interactivity to the game because instead of just going nuts, so to speak, you can peek out around a corner and just pick off the baddies one at a time. Also worth mentioning, this game comes with a second 'mini' game as well. It's called Mighty Joe Jupiter, and the player takes the form of a spaceman hero fighting funny aliens. It contains training exercises and a small storyline to play as well. End Game gives you a lot of bang for your buck, almost like getting two games in one.

Next up, we have Vampire Night. This game is considered by many to be a cousin of the House of the Dead arcade games. This is because many of the features and style in the game are so very similar. This is a two player light-gun game, where players can use 2 light-guns, 2 standard controllers or one of each. Making it fun for a broad range of players who may not have the gun but still want to play it. In this game the player does follow a path from A to B, but the path can change. They will always start at A and end up at B, but depending on if certain objects, enemies or innocent lives are hit, the player might take another route down an alley or onto the rooftops. This game is very fast paced with bosses at the end of each level. There is also a side quest game, where the player must obtain, somewhat unusual, objects throughout the game and in doing so, can purchase upgrades to help them in the game the next time. This is indeed a fun game but unfortunately it gets old somewhat quicker than others.

Okay, the last game we'll talk about is Starsky and Hutch. This is another very unique gun game. However, the gun can only be used in two player mode, but don't worry, finding another player won't be so hard since this game is so fun! This game is one of the must interactive of all the light-gun games. One player drives the famous red car with the white stripe, the 'Zebra 3', the other player leans out the window to shoots bad guys and power-ups, not to mention fire hydrants, power lines and news boxes! This game is packed with features, the driver can free roam anywhere, there is no set path. There is a fun and challenging storyline mode, special modes including stunt and shooting specials, free roam mode and the game is full of unlockables. This game has hours of playability and doesn't get old very fast at all. This is hands down the most fun, and interactive, of the two player light-gun PS2 games.

This is just a taste of the gun games available for the PS2. There are others as well, but this can give you a taste of what is available and why getting a Guncon2, or third party equivalent, might be a fun addition to you existing game collection.
